LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye which is intended to correct or at least minimize disorders with sight. LASIK is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally preferable to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is made. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism as well as other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this data to find out the amount as well as location of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is done with the person awake, still, the person is often given a modest sedative and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or blade. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications can occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A number of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not characterized long-term damaging complications. The lASIK procedure can't be reversed.
