LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye surgery which is intended to correct or lessen troubles with eyesight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferable to pRK surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time to heal completely. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized sophisticated scanner and a corneal map is created. This step of the process also picks up astigmatism and additional irregularities in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The surgery is done with the person awake and functional, however, the person is typically given a minor sedating medication and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or laser. And then, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems can occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. A number of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap that was produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, clinical studies have not defined long-term complications. The process can't be reversed.
