LASIK is a type of laser eye operation designed to correct disorders with sight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is much less painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This process also detects astigmatism as well as other irregularities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to determine the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is carried out with the patient awake, all the same, the patient is usually given a modest sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage may occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap that was produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research has not proven long-term or permanent complications. The process is irreversible.
