LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye surgery designed to correct or at least minimize problems with vision. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is usually preferred to pRK surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This step of the process also detects astigmatism or additional peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed while the person is awake and alert, all the same, the person is typically given a mild sedating drug and anesthetic eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or laser. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury or damage. Although usually uncommon, complications may occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not determined long-term or permanent damage. The procedure is irreversible.
