LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery intended to improve or correct issues with vision. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is commonly preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven scanning device and a corneal map is devised. This stage of the procedure also detects astigmatism and other irregularities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to determine the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed with the person awake, however, the patient is often given a modest sedative and anesthetizing eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications might occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, studies have not defined long-term complications. The eye surgery is irreversible.
