LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation meant to correct disorders with eyesight. LASIK is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye problems. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less painful and requires less time for full recovery. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized sophisticated scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This stage of the process also picks up astigmatism or other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The operation is done with the patient awake and alert, still, the person is usually given a mild sedating agent and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems could occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. Some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, clinical studies have not proven long-term complications or damage. The eye surgery can't be reversed.
