LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery which is intended to repair disorders with eyesight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually preferable to pRK surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time for healing. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism or additional deviations in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to determine the location as well as the amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is carried out with the person awake and alert, all the same, the patient is generally given a modest sedating medication and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications may occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap that was made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, studies have not proven long-term or permanent complications. The surgery cannot be reversed.
