LASIK is a type of laser-guided operation to the eye meant to remedy problems with sight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and a corneal map is devised. This stage of the procedure also discovers astigmatism & other irregularities in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to compute the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is done while the patient is awake and functional, even so, the person is usually given a minor sedative and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications do occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. A number of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, clinical studies have not characterized long-term complications or damage. The eye surgery cannot be reversed.
