LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye which is intended to rectify issues with eyesight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in eye problems. LASIK is typically preferable to pRK surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time to heal completely. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This stage of the process also picks up astigmatism or other problems in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this information to find out the amount and location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed with the person awake, but, the person is usually given a minor sedating drug and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating injury or damage. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications might occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. Just some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap that was produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not proven long-term complicating problems. The surgery can't be reversed.
