LASIK is a type of laser surgery to the eye intended to improve or correct issues with vision. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and it creates a map of the cornea. This step of the procedure also detects astigmatism & other problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to calculate the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is done with the patient awake and functional, still, the person is often given a modest sedating medication and anesthetic eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems do occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, clinical studies have not defined long-term or permanent complications. The process cannot be reversed.
