LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye operation which is intended to correct or lessen difficulties with sight. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is generally preferred to pRK surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This stage of the process also spots astigmatism and also other peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to determine the location as well as the amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is carried out while the patient is awake, even so, the patient is typically given a mild sedative and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications could occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. A number of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap that was produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not characterized long-term complicating problems. The procedure is irreversible.
