LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye which is intended to improve troubles with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is ordinarily preferable to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized sophisticated scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism and also additional peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to judge the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is done while the person is awake and functional, but, the person is often given a mild sedating drug and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, some complications could occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. A number of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap that was produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, studies have not completely defined long-term complications. The surgery cannot be reversed.
