LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye surgery designed to repair problems with sight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is made. This process also spots astigmatism as well as other deviations in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to calculate the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed while the patient is awake, nonetheless, the patient is generally given a modest sedative and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems might occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research studies have not characterized long-term damaging complications. The eye surgery is irreversible.
