LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation meant to rectify difficulties with eyesight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less painful and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This step of the procedure also discovers astigmatism or other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this data to find out the location as well as the amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is performed with the person awake and alert, however, the patient is often given a modest sedating agent and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating injury to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap that was made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, clinical studies have not determined long-term complicating problems. The procedure is irreversible.
