LASIK is a type of laser eye operation designed to correct or at least minimize issues with vision. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye problems. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the process also picks up astigmatism and additional irregularities in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to judge the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is carried out while the patient is awake and functional, still, the person is usually given a mild sedative and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications can occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research has not ascertained long-term complications. The process cannot be reversed.
