LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye surgery intended to repair troubles with vision. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in eye disorders. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven scanner and a map of the cornea is made. This procedure also spots astigmatism and additional deviations in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to compute the amount as well as location of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The surgery is carried out while the person is awake and alert, however, the person is generally given a modest sedating agent and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications could occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just a few of the more typically reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research studies have not ascertained long-term or permanent damage. The eye surgery can't be reversed.
