LASIK is a form of laser eye operation which is intended to correct or at least minimize troubles with vision. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is usually preferred to pRK surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This step of the process also discovers astigmatism as well as additional deviations in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to find out the amount as well as location of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is done with the patient awake and alert, however, the person is often given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage may occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, scientists have not proven long-term damaging complications. The surgical procedure cannot be reversed.
