LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye surgery designed to improve disorders with sight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferable to pRK surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and it creates a map of the cornea. This step of the procedure also detects astigmatism and also other deviations in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to determine the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is carried out while the person is awake, all the same, the patient is often given a mild sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications may occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, studies have not defined long-term or permanent damage. The eye surgery is irreversible.
