LASIK is a type of laser-guided operation to the eye which is intended to repair problems with eyesight. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in eye disorders. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven scanner and a corneal map is created. This stage of the procedure also discovers astigmatism and other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this data to ascertain the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The surgery is performed while the patient is awake and alert, but, the person is often given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications do occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap that was made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, clinical studies have not determined long-term or permanent complications. The surgical procedure can't be reversed.
