LASIK is a type of laser operation to the eye designed to cure or improve troubles with vision. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferable to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This procedure also spots astigmatism or additional problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to calculate the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed while the person is awake and functional, but, the patient is usually given a modest sedative and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage or injury. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems might occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A number of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, clinical studies have not proven long-term complications or damage. The lASIK procedure cannot be reversed.
