LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery intended to correct difficulties with sight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye problems. LASIK is ordinarily preferable to pRK eye surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This process also picks up astigmatism as well as additional peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this data to compute the location and amount of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is carried out with the person awake and functional, even so, the patient is generally given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not completely defined long-term complications or damage. The surgery cannot be reversed.
