LASIK is a form of laser eye operation which is intended to rectify disorders with eyesight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians who specialize in eye disorders. LASIK is usually preferred to pRK eye surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This stage of the process also spots astigmatism or additional problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to ascertain the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is performed while the patient is awake and functional, still, the patient is usually given a modest sedating drug and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage could occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A number of the more typically reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, rings around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, studies have not completely determined long-term damaging complications. The lASIK procedure is irreversible.
