LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery meant to minimize or repair troubles with eyesight. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less painful and requires less time to recover. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanner and a corneal map is devised. This step of the procedure also discovers astigmatism & other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is performed while the person is awake, however, the patient is usually given a minor sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, damaging complications could occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not completely determined long-term complications or damage. The eye surgery can't be reversed.
