LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye which is intended to correct troubles with vision. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to heal completely. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This procedure also picks up astigmatism or additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to compute the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operation is carried out with the person awake and functional, all the same, the person is typically given a mild sedating agent and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications may occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just a few of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap that was produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, research has not completely determined long-term complications. The procedure can't be reversed.
