LASIK is a type of laser-guided surgery to the eye which is intended to correct or at least minimize problems with eyesight. It is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to heal completely. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanning device and a corneal map is devised. This procedure also discovers astigmatism and other deviations in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount and location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is done while the patient is awake and functional, even so, the person is often given a mild sedating medication and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage or injury. Although relatively uncommon, some complications may occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, studies have not defined long-term or permanent damage. The surgical procedure is irreversible.
