LASIK is a form of laser operation to the eye meant to fix difficulties with sight. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is typically preferred to pRK surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This process also picks up astigmatism and also other problems in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to find out the location and amount of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is performed with the patient awake and alert, however, the patient is usually given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications could occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. A few of of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, scientists have not ascertained long-term complications or damage. The lASIK procedure is irreversible.
