LASIK is a type of laser-guided operation to the eye intended to rectify problems with vision. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in eye disorders. LASIK is typically preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism and also additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to compute the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The surgery is performed while the person is awake and alert, even so, the patient is typically given a modest sedating drug and anesthetizing eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage could occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, scientists have not defined long-term or permanent complications. The lASIK procedure can't be reversed.
