LASIK is a form of laser eye operation which is intended to minimize or repair difficulties with eyesight. LASIK is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is ordinarily preferred to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is not as painful and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven scanning device and a corneal map is created. This stage of the procedure also detects astigmatism and additional problems in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to judge the location as well as the amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is done with the patient awake and functional, nevertheless, the patient is usually given a minor sedating medication and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating harm to the eye. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not completely defined long-term complicating problems. The procedure is irreversible.
