LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye which is intended to correct disorders with eyesight. It is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferable to pRK surgery, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to recover. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This process also discovers astigmatism or other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to find out the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is carried out while the person is awake, all the same, the person is often given a mild sedating drug and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or laser. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, damaging complications do occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. A few of of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research has not proven long-term damaging complications. The process cannot be reversed.
