LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation meant to fix issues with sight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled sophisticated scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This procedure also picks up astigmatism & other deviations in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The surgery is done while the patient is awake and alert, but, the person is generally given a modest sedating agent and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, some complications might occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A few of of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap that was produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, scientists have not characterized long-term complications. The eye surgery is irreversible.
