LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation intended to improve problems with sight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is commonly preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is not as painful and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized scanner and a corneal map is devised. This process also discovers astigmatism or additional irregularities in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this information to calculate the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The surgery is performed with the patient awake and alert, even so, the patient is typically given a modest sedating medication and anesthetic eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications may occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, research studies have not proven long-term complications. The procedure is irreversible.
