LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery meant to minimize or repair issues with sight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is generally preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized scanner and a corneal map is created. This stage of the procedure also discovers astigmatism and additional problems in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is done with the person awake, but, the patient is generally given a mild sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or blade. And then, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems might occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not completely determined long-term or permanent complications. The eye surgery is irreversible.
