LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye designed to improve or correct problems with vision. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is typically preferable to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanning device and it creates a map of the cornea. This step of the process also spots astigmatism & other deviations in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this data to determine the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is done with the patient awake, still, the patient is often given a minor sedating medication and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications can occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap that was produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, scientists have not defined long-term damaging complications. The procedure can't be reversed.
