LASIK is a type of laser surgery to the eye intended to remedy troubles with eyesight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time to heal completely. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and a map of the cornea is made. This step of the procedure also detects astigmatism or other problems in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to find out the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is performed while the patient is awake and functional, but, the person is generally given a mild sedating drug and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage might occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just a few of the more typically reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research has not completely defined long-term complications or damage. The process is irreversible.
