LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery designed to minimize or repair issues with vision. LASIK is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is typically preferred to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is not as painful and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanner and a corneal map is created. This procedure also spots astigmatism and other irregularities in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this information to calculate the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is carried out with the patient awake, even so, the patient is usually given a mild sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or a laser. And then, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complications might occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, clinical studies have not defined long-term complications or damage. The surgery cannot be reversed.
