LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye intended to fix difficulties with sight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is usually preferable to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven sophisticated scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This procedure also discovers astigmatism and also additional problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to judge the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is carried out while the patient is awake and functional, but, the patient is typically given a minor sedating drug and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage may occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not characterized long-term damaging complications. The procedure is irreversible.
