LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation which is intended to correct troubles with eyesight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is ordinarily preferable to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized sophisticated scanner and it creates a map of the cornea. This stage of the procedure also detects astigmatism as well as additional deviations in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this data to find out the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operation is done with the person awake and functional, still, the person is often given a modest sedative and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems can occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not completely determined long-term or permanent damage. The surgery cannot be reversed.
