LASIK is a type of laser-guided operation to the eye meant to correct or lessen difficulties with eyesight. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism and other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to determine the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is done while the patient is awake and alert, all the same, the patient is usually given a modest sedating drug and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage could occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not determined long-term or permanent complications. The eye surgery cannot be reversed.
