LASIK is a form of laser eye operation which is intended to improve troubles with vision. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover completely. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanner and a corneal map is devised. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism & additional peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount as well as location of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is carried out while the person is awake and functional, nevertheless, the patient is generally given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications might occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. A few of of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap that was made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, studies have not characterized long-term complications. The process is irreversible.
