LASIK is a form of laser operation to the eye which is intended to fix disorders with sight. It is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in eye problems. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This step of the process also picks up astigmatism as well as other deviations in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to compute the location as well as the amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is done while the patient is awake and functional, still, the patient is often given a modest sedating agent and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage can occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just a few of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, clinical studies have not ascertained long-term or permanent damage. The eye surgery cannot be reversed.
