LASIK is a type of laser operation to the eye which is intended to improve troubles with vision. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in eye disorders. LASIK is usually preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized sophisticated scanning device and it creates a map of the cornea. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications can occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research studies have not completely determined long-term or permanent damage. The surgery can't be reversed.
