LASIK is a form of laser-guided surgery to the eye intended to rectify difficulties with eyesight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This step of the procedure also detects astigmatism or other problems in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this data to find out the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operation is performed with the patient awake and alert, all the same, the person is typically given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications do occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not defined long-term damaging complications. The surgical procedure cannot be reversed.
