LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye intended to minimize or repair difficulties with eyesight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually preferable to pRK eye surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized scanner and a corneal map is devised. This stage of the process also spots astigmatism as well as other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this data to find out the location as well as the amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is carried out with the patient awake and alert, even so, the patient is often given a modest sedating medication and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. And then, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing injury or damage. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems do occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, clinical studies have not ascertained long-term complications. The lASIK procedure is irreversible.
