LASIK is a type of laser eye operation which is intended to repair troubles with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally preferred to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This process also picks up astigmatism and additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to calculate the amount and location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is done with the person awake and functional, all the same, the patient is usually given a minor sedating drug and anesthetic eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage may occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, studies have not determined long-term complicating problems. The surgery can't be reversed.
