LASIK is a type of laser eye operation intended to cure or improve issues with vision. The surgical procedure is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferred to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer driven scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the process also spots astigmatism as well as other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to judge the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is carried out while the person is awake and alert, but, the person is generally given a mild sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or blade. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications do occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap that was created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not defined long-term or permanent damage. The surgery cannot be reversed.
