LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye which is intended to minimize or repair troubles with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is not as painful and requires less time for full recovery. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized sophisticated scanner and a corneal map is created. This stage of the process also detects astigmatism and also additional problems in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this information to calculate the amount and location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is done with the person awake and alert, still, the person is usually given a minor sedative and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or a blade. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing injury to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications may occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just a few of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap produced during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, scientists have not characterized long-term complications. The eye surgery is irreversible.
