LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye which is intended to correct or lessen issues with sight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs who specialize in eye disorders. LASIK is ordinarily preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanning device and it creates a map of the cornea. This step of the process also spots astigmatism or other deviations in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to judge the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is carried out with the patient awake and alert, all the same, the patient is usually given a mild sedating agent and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications may occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. Just a few of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research has not ascertained long-term damaging complications. The procedure is irreversible.
