LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye which is intended to remedy difficulties with vision. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye disorders. LASIK is generally a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is much less painful and requires less time to heal completely. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This process also detects astigmatism and also other problems in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this information to compute the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed while the patient is awake, but, the person is often given a modest sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications can occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. Just some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap that was created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, clinical studies have not completely determined long-term complications. The eye surgery can't be reversed.
