LASIK is a type of laser-guided surgery to the eye meant to fix difficulties with eyesight. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK eye surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized sophisticated scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This step of the procedure also picks up astigmatism & additional peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is performed while the person is awake and alert, but, the person is usually given a minor sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a blade or laser. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications do occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research studies have not defined long-term complications. The surgical procedure cannot be reversed.
