LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye operation designed to correct disorders with sight. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled sophisticated scanning device and a corneal map is devised. This step of the process also spots astigmatism and additional deviations in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to calculate the amount as well as location of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The operation is carried out while the patient is awake and functional, still, the person is typically given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic eye drops. The surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or a laser. And then, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage can occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, changing vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and troubles with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research has not characterized long-term or permanent damage. The lASIK procedure is irreversible.
